Put this into perspective
I can’t help but notice that so many people bitch, whine and complain about how as Canadians, we are slowly losing our ‘rights’ and ‘freedoms.’ I often hear my co-workers complain about the gun registry, Skytrain cops, and so on… Okay, so maybe they aren’t totally off the deep end, but for a second, let us look at a place where ‘rights’ and ‘freedoms’ are only a dream.
In a newspaper called “Press Trust of India”, a sad story is told about a Muslim couple in India that has been told by local Islamic leaders that they must separate after the husband “divorced” his wife in his sleep. Huh???
Sohela Ansari told her friends that her husband, Aftab, had uttered the word “talaq,” or divorce, three times in his sleep. When local Islamic leaders got to hear, they said Aftab’s words constituted a divorce under an Islamic procedure known as “triple talaq.” These poor people are not even allowed to have dreams! The couple, who have been married for 11 years and have three children, were told they had to split. The religious leaders ruled that if the couple wanted to remarry they would have to wait at least 100 days. Sohela would also have to spend a night with another man and be divorced by him in turn. The couple have refused to obey the order and the issue has been referred to a local family counseling center.
So the next time you hear some self centered wanker lamenting about his rights being taken away, tell them to go play in traffic.
On a side note, it IS important to fight for our rights. We just need make sure that we are fighting the right fight. We need to keep our focus, and as a society ensure that we are properly weighing our options when placing limits on ‘rights’ and ‘freedoms.’
