Standing room only...

Today I decided to write a little something about our mass transit system. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We have this wonderful thing call a Sky Train. (Do a Google search to see pictures.) I've been taking the Sky Train everyday now for several months. I have come to realize that there is a group of people who ought to be taken out and buried alive.

Here is why…

When it’s rush hour and there are about two hundred thousand people all trying to get to the same place at the same time, you can sometimes get a sense of who a person is by watching their “mass transit behavior.” Walking on to the platform, you can see a large throng of people standing waiting for the next train. I can’t help but notice that everyone, myself included, tries to stand as close to where the doors are going to open. WHY!!! Is it to guarantee a place on the train? Not likely. In the 5 months that I’ve been taking the Sky Train, there are only 3 times that I could not get on right away. I think this social behavior has more to do with being “first.”

“Oh man… I hope that I can be first on the train! I know that there is no chance that I’ll be able to sit, but that’s OK… At least I’ll be first.”

So far so good, right? Nothing to get worked up about… yet.

For the most part, people who are waiting for the doors to open stand to the side of the doors. This allows for the quick exit of those wishing to get off. However, there are a bunch of low life cretins that have decided that they are more important than everyone else. They stand RIGHT in front of the soon to be opening doors. I mean come on… How do you get off the train? The doors open and some 40-something guy in a goofy toupee is standing there picking his nose and won’t get out of the way. He’s standing there with his finger completely imbedded up to his knuckle and is looking at you like a guy looks at his shoe after stepping in dog crap. What’s worse is that at each door there are 5 or 6 of these by-products of industrial waste.

Then there are the “shovers”. These are the people who must be somewhat blind. Why else would they completely ignore the 20 people standing there and shove their way past everyone else. There is nothing like being pushed aside while some self centered 20-something, over perfumed, thinks she’s a diva, chick wafts her way past you.

All this make you want to throw these low life’s right on the tracks… Come on people, GROW UP!!!
